A patent for Prof. Dr. Sadeq Hussein Bakhy, University of Technology / Department of Mechanical Engineering, and several academic staff members.

Invention title:

Design and Fabrication of Resistance Spot Welding Machine to Manufacture Honeycomb Core for Sandwich Panels

Abstract:

Composite materials are used in the aircraft and automotive industries and in various engineering applications because they have lightweight, high resistance and energy absorption. Sandwich panel with honeycomb core is one of the most important composite material classifications, it consists of relatively thin but stiff face sheets and a thick but soft honeycomb-type core, which has several types of shapes and materials.

The existence of adhesives material in the manufacture of these panels is essential. Due to the dynamic stresses and high vibrations in the real application, adhesives are considering one of the most important causes of the failure of these panels because they do not have all the mechanical properties to maintain the form of this structure.

The proposed idea attempts to overcome these industrial constraints by using spot resistance welding instead of adhesive material in the manufacture of sandwich panels with honeycomb core. Due to the unavailability of a machine with specifications that allow the manufacture of honeycomb core for sandwich panels, the machine is designed with a controller that allows control of spot welding conditions (welding time, squeezing force, and squeezing time after welding).

Shear stress test was performed on specimens jointed by three types of adhesive material and specimens joint by spot welding by the proposed machine, according to the American Welding Society (AWS). It was observed that shear stress in welded samples under optimal conditions is 60 times greater than shear stress with glued samples. Therefore, the proposed spot-welding machine can be used in the production of sandwich panels for the aircraft and automobile industry.

His Excellency the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Inspects the Conduct of Examinations in the Department of Mechanical Engineering

His Excellency the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Naeem Al-Aboudi, inspected the examinations in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, in the presence of the President of the University of Technology, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al-Ghabban, the Scientific Undersecretary of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Prof. Dr. Haider Abd Dahad, and the Assistant President for Administrative Affairs, Prof. Dr. Hussein Hamid Karim, and the Assistant President The university for scientific affairs and postgraduate studies, Prof. Dr. Khawla Salah Khashan, the head of the department, Dr. Moayad Razouqi Hassan, and the advanced staff of the University of Technology.

The Minister was briefed on the central preparations taken by the department in providing the appropriate atmosphere for students to facilitate the conduct of the exams in the fullest way, which were in line with the directives of the Ministry and the presidency of the university in accordance with the requirements that achieve the best atmosphere for performing the exams.

His Excellency also toured the classrooms and asked his questions to students about the nature of the questions and the appropriateness of the exam halls, as His Excellency, praised all the efforts taken during the student’s performance on the exams at the end of the first semester of the current academic year.

To all students

participation in the scientific training program on cybersecurity

With the increasing reliance on the digital services provided by the University of Technology through the Information Technology Center, and the advantages these services offer and the rise of digital threats, it has become one of the most important priorities of the university to adopt the directives of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in approving specialized programs and courses in cybersecurity to serve the university teaching staff and students.

In order to contribute to increasing the level of students’ awareness of digital threats and their risks and damages, we would like to inform you about the establishment of a scientific and entertaining training camp for cybersecurity in cooperation with the Firewall Company for Cybersecurity Services. It is planned to set up the camp in the governorates of Erbil and Dohuk for a period of seven days, including travel days, where the company will transport the participants and provide them with housing and training at a price of (130) US dollars, knowing that the price decreases when the participating students’ number increases.

Therefore, we invite all scientific departments to urge their students to participate in this training camp by filling out the electronic information form below, noting that the camp will be held during the spring break period and according to the attached program.
